Amazon Shelves Sam Altman Biopic Amid OpenAI Partnership Concerns
Amazon MGM Studios has abruptly withdrawn from releasing "Artificial," a nearly completed biopic about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The decision follows Amazon's $50 billion cloud computing partnership with OpenAI, suggesting strategic avoidance of content that might strain the lucrative relationship.
The Luca Guadagnino-directed film dramatizes Altman's turbulent 2023 ouster and reinstatement at OpenAI, featuring Andrew Garfield as the tech mogul. Industry observers note the move reflects growing corporate caution as Big Tech's AI investments reach unprecedented scales—Amazon's total commitments to OpenAI now approach $88 billion across recent deals.
Prime Video's Mike Hopkins personally informed the creative team of the shelving. Amazon maintains the project could find success elsewhere, stating: "We believe 'Artificial' will be better served by a different studio." The film boasts an A-list cast including Monica Barbaro as Mira Murati and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk.
